Brobdingnagian Wind With A Chance Of Run-outs.
Walt H. Rambaransingh | Date 03/05/17
On a windy & blustery early March day, the Palm Beach Titans continued their 2017 South Florida Premiere League 40 over campaign. Game 5 of the 2017 SFPL 40 over regular season would be played against United SC at Tradewinds Park on a day where wind burn was an actual concern. United SC won the toss and elected to bat first.
Anglin & Krishna opened the bowling. The continuous extremely windy conditions would require adjustments which caused several wide balls in the opening 15 overs. The opening pair bowled 3 overs each at the beginning of the innings. The first wicket fell in the 2nd over via a textbook, direct hit run-out of the on-strike opening batsman from Tanmay who was fielding at the mid-on position. The 2nd wicket fell in Krishna’s 3rd over (6th overall) via a caught behind wicketkeeper catch from Tiki Singh. The first change bowlers of Tanmay and Nagarjun started in the 7th over. Both had auspicious first overs as both unfortunately allowed “5 wides” each via wide balls bowled that ended up past the back-end boundary. They both recouped well with stingy overs after their first overs. Tanmay took the important wickets of the opposing skipper & danger batsman via an LBW decision in his 2nd over (9th overall). At the 15 over break, the opposition had 68 runs on the scorecard with 4 wickets lost including the #s 1, 3, 4, & 5 batsmen. After that first break, the opening bowlers along with 2nd change spinning bowler Atif was put in to bowl. Atif was returning to his beloved Titans after a 2 year hiatus. After a porous first over with several wide balls bowled, Atif managed to get his first wicket that over via a catch by Errol. Atif’s first over included a run out by Skipper Andre & Tiki. From his mid-on fielding position, Skipper Andre quickly chased down a ball heading for the backward square leg boundary and precisely threw it in to wicketkeeper Tiki who effectively removed the bails for the clinical run-out after the opposition’s batting pair attempted a 2nd run. Atif then continued his destruction of the remaining batsmen by removing 4 lower order batsmen to end the first innings. Fielding highlights included 2 wicketkeeper catches by Tiki Singh and run-outs by Tanmay and Skipper Andre. Bowling highlights included a 4 wicket haul by Atif and a 2 wicket haul from Tanmay. Krishna and Atif also each bowled a wicket maiden over in their spells. At the end of the innings, United SC scored 108 runs all out after 27.2 overs. Palm Beach Titans CC Bowling details of the day are below:
Anglin – 6 overs, 0 maidens, 21 runs, 1 wicket.
Krishna – 6 overs, 1 maiden, 22 runs, 1 wicket.
Tanmay- 5 overs, 0 maidens, 21 runs, 2 wickets.
Nagarjun- 5 overs 0 maidens, 22 runs, 0 wickets.
Atif – 5.2 overs, 2 maidens, 14 runs, 4 wickets.
Chucky & Tiki opened the batting. Unfortunately, Tiki lost his wicket with the last ball of the 2nd over via a “phantom” edge back to the wicketkeeper that was excessively begged from the opposing team. Praveen replaced Tiki at the batting crease and had a quick 4 over, 30 run partnership with Chucky before he lost his wicket by being bowled by the opening bowler & opposing skipper. Nathan then came to the crease and took about 20 balls faced to settle into the run chase. Chucky lost his wicket about an over & a half into his partnership with Nathan. Krishna replaced Chucky. After the opposition’s first change bowlers were brought in, the pair of Nathan & Krishna began to accelerate their way to the desired total. By the 15 over break, the Titans had 84 runs on the scorecard with 3 wickets lost and only needing 25 more runs for victory. Nathan and Krishna quickly chased down the remaining needed runs in less than 2 overs after the first break with Nathan scoring some beautifully struck 4s and 6s. Batting highlights included Nathan with 49 runs (not out), Krishna with 24 runs (not out) and Chucky with 20 runs. Palm Beach Titans CC chased down the necessary 108 runs in 16.5 overs with an important 79 run batting partnership between Nathan and Krishna to win the match. Palm Beach Titans win by 7 wickets.
The Palm Beach Titans continued their 2017 South Florida Premiere League 40 over season with a crushing victory over United SC. Batting highlights included Nathan with 49 runs (not out), Krishna with 24 runs (not out) and Chucky with 20 runs. Bowling highlights included a 4 wicket haul by Atif and a 2 wicket haul from Tanmay. Only one opposing batsman scored in double digits but his 40 scored runs were matched by the 40 extras that the squad allowed as a bowling unit. Fielding highlights included 2 wicketkeeper catches by Tiki Singh and run-outs by Tanmay and Skipper Andre. Noteworthy and worrisome critiques included 40 extras including 32 wide balls bowled as a bowling unit. With 4 games remaining in the season’s 9 game regular season, the Palm Beach Titans CC have 3 wins and 2 losses. At the midpoint in the 40 over regular season, the team’s bowling contingent looks to improve their proficiency (by bowling less wide balls) while the team’s batting contingent continues to garner lengthy and thus, more effective partnerships.
