On a cloudy & cool late February day, the Palm Beach Titans continued their 2017 South Florida Premiere League 40 over campaign. Game 4 of the 2017 SFPL 40 over regular season would be played against Challengers SC at the Boynton Beach ground. Challengers won the toss and elected to bat first.
Anglin & Krishna opened the bowling. The opening pair began with super stingy 4 over spells on the trot. Anglin’s first bowled ball was a wide ball but he did not allow a single run in the remainder of his opening 4 over spell, bowling 3 maiden overs in a row with his 2nd, 3rd & 4th overs bowled. The first change bowlers were Nathan and Andre. They began their spells in the 10th over. However, the first change pair (along with one over from 2nd change bowler, Errol) allowed 53 run in overs 10 through 15. Thus, at the 15 over break, Challengers had 68 runs on the scorecard with 3 wickets lost. The 2nd change bowlers were Errol and Sanjay. Errol’s overs were expensive as he allowed 33 runs off his 2 overs. The Titans bowlers were not effective in overs 16 thru 30, allowing 149 runs to be scored (more than twice as much as the runs allowed in the first 15 overs). The #4 batsman (the opposing captain) scored a century and was finally removed in the 27th over via a catch from Nagarjun off Skipper Andre’s bowling. The opening bowlers were brought back a couple overs after the 30 over break and helped restrict the opposition to 64 runs in the final 10 overs. Fielding highlights included 2 catches by Nagarjun and 2 wicketkeeper catches by Chucky, but 4 dropped catches continued to overshadow the inning’s fielding highlights. Bowling highlights included a 3 wicket haul by Skipper Andre (although he had a high economy of 9.3) along with 2 wicket hauls from Anglin (including 3 consecutive maiden overs) and Nagarjun. At the end of the innings, Challengers scored 281 runs for 8 wickets lost after 40 overs. Palm Beach Titans CC Bowling details of the day are below:
Anglin – 8 overs, 3 maidens, 27 runs, 2 wickets.
Krishna – 8 overs, 0 maidens, 40 runs, 0 wickets.
Nathan- 5 overs, 0 maidens, 31 runs, 1 wicket.
Andre- 8 overs 0 maiden, 74 runs, 3 wickets.
Errol - 2 overs, 0 maidens, 33 runs, 0 wickets.
Sanjay – 4 overs, 0 maidens, 34 runs, 0 wickets
Nagarjun – 5 overs, 0 maidens, 36 runs, 2 wickets
Chucky & Krishna opened the batting. The opening batsmen began with a methodical 36 run partnership before Krishna lost his wicket via an LBW decision one ball into the 10th over. Praveen replaced Krishna at the crease. He had a quick 34 run partnership with Chucky before Chucky lost his wicket via another LBW decision 3 balls before the 15 over break. At that break, the Palm Beach Titans had 71 runs on the scorecard with 2 wickets lost. Anglin replaced Chucky. Praveen lost his wicket 4 overs after the break and Skipper Andre replaced him at the batting crease. Anglin and Skipper Andre settled into what appeared to be an 85 run foundational partnership for the run chase. But Anglin unfortunately lost his wicket on the last ball prior to the 30 over break after scoring a solid 46 runs with several bodacious 6s. At that 30 over break, the Titans had 173 runs on the scorecard with 4 wickets lost. In the last 10 overs, the Titans needed about 11 runs per over required for victory. Skipper Andre lost his wicket in the 33rd over right after hitting a six to achieve his half-century. Nathan, who replaced Anglin, was the only remaining Titans batsman to score substantial runs. At the end of the 40 overs, the team scored a total of 233 runs, with Nathan scoring 29 runs (not out). Batting highlights included Skipper Andre with 52 runs, Anglin with 46 runs, Chucky with 37 runs and Nathan with 29 runs (not out). Palm Beach Titans CC scored 233 runs for 8 wickets lost in 40 overs. Palm Beach Titans lose by 48 runs.
The Palm Beach Titans continued their 2017 South Florida Premiere League 40 over season by suffering a loss to Challengers SC. Batting highlights included Skipper Andre with 52 runs, Anglin with 46 runs, Chucky with 37 runs and Nathan with 29 runs (not out). Bowling highlights included a 3 wicket haul by Skipper Andre along with 2 wicket hauls from Anglin (including 3 impressive consecutive maiden overs) and Nagarjun. Fielding highlights included 2 catches by Nagarjun and 2 wicketkeeper catches by Chucky. Critiques included 4 dropped catches (any of which were taken, would have removed important runs from the run chase). Outside of the performance of the opening bowlers in the first 9 overs, the bowling contingent, as a whole, allowed too many runs off the bat especially to the opposing captain who scored a century. This game serves as a warning that the entire team bowling lineup needs to perform to high par levels for success in future games. With 5 games remaining in the season’s 9 game regular season, the Palm Beach Titans CC have 2 wins and 2 losses. After 4 games as a new team, the squad will continue their evolution as a unit by continuing to define and refine the roles of each player.
