Titans Win 2012 Southshore Mothers’ Day Tournament

Walt H. Rambaransingh

On a warm Mothers’ Day Sunday, 9 Titans made the journey to Clewiston to participate in Southshore’s annual Mothers’ Day 20/20 over tournament.  Being short 2 players, Gary Gayle & Robin Myers from Southshore enthusiastically volunteered their services to help us complete a competitive 11 man squad.  After a late start that resulted in the games being reduced to 12 over games, Titans were chosen to play the first game against St. Lucie.  Titans won the toss and chose to bat first.  The opening pair of Krishna C. & Dalip M. contributed totals of 6 & 11 runs respectively before losing their wickets.  Rakesh R. & Prateek S. put in contributions of 10 & 20 runs respectively.  The Titans ended up with a modest first inning total of 62 to defend.

The Titans defense of their total began with 2 overs of spectacular bowling & fielding.  Gowtham earned a wicket in the first over & started the pressure on the opposition.  Then DK came in to bowl the second over.  After he was done with that second over, 3 more wickets had fallen, 1 from a run out.  After 8 overs, St. Lucie had 31 runs & lost 9 wickets.  They got to 55 runs at the end of the 12 overs.  Titans win a spot in the final by defending their first innings totals with superb bowling & fielding, including some special direct hits.  The huge crowd that gathered for Mothers’ Day was entertained by an awesome, energizing first game.

The second game featured Oswald Park vs St. Bess.  After watching Oswald Park squeak by St. Bess, Titans were put in to field after losing the toss for the finals game.  Myers gathered 4 wickets in the innings & Titans had managed Oswald Park to 48 runs with 4 wickets lost after the end of 9 overs.  But a blister of boundaries in the last 3 overs brought Oswald Park’s total to a competitive 87 runs at the end of 12 overs.  This innings also featured great fielding support including a highlight spectacular catch by Gary Gayle to dismiss E. Tucker.

The Titan’s run chase of 88 began with an assault from the opening batsmen of Dalip & Krishna in the first 4 overs after which the Titans had 47 runs with 0 wickets lost due to a 26 run 4th over.  Krishna C. was dismissed in the 5th over for 10 runs.  After 9 overs, Titans had 80 runs with 3 wickets lost & the win seemed inevitable.  Dalip was bowled 4 runs shy of his half century in the 10th over but the damage had already been done.  Skipper Tiki & Myers brought the game home with 5 balls to spare.  Titans win the tournament!

Many thanks to the tourney host, Southshore for treating the Titans like family, as always.  Dalip won the “Most Runs” award and the MVP tournament award for his massive 6's and scorching 4's.  Myers won the “Most Wickets” award & Gary Gayle won the “Best fielder” trophy.  A Clean sweep for the special Titans squad that included Tiki, DK, Dalip, Walt, Rakesh, Krishna, Akhil, Atul & Gowtham!  Skipper Tiki took home the Championship trophy with a proud smile!

We look forward to defending the Titan’s title in this tournament in 2013.  Thanks again to Southshore for a great day of cricket.  The 20/20 season begins in June and this tourney was a great warm-up for the upcoming season.  GO TITANS!
